„NO KlezMORE APARTHEID, KILLING and DESTRUCTION – Wir sagen NEIN!“

Wir, BDS Austria, rufen als Teil der weltweiten BDS-Kampagne zum Boykott des 15. KlezMORE Festival Vienna​ vom 10.–25. November 2018 auf.

Der Grund ist die Unterstützung durch die israelische Botschaft in Österreich. Mit dieser Unterstützung wird ein Kulturevent, das eigentlich Menschen zusammenbringen soll, zu einer Werbeveranstaltung für die israelische Apartheids-, Besatzungs-, und Vertreibungspolitik.
Die MusikerInnen und ihre Musik werden zur Begleitmusik einer menschenverachtenden Politik gegen die legitimen Rechte der PalästinenserInnen.

Das Klezmore Festival ist mit der Unterstützung der israelischen Botschaft die Begleitmusik für:

● die Zerstörung der palästinensischen Ortschaft Khan al-Amar – inklusive ihrer Schule und dem Kindergarten – und die Vertreibung der dort ansässigen Bevölkerung

● die Ermordung hunderter und Verstümmelung tausender PalästinenserInnen an der Grenze von Gaza, durch Scharfschützen und Kampfflugzeuge

● die Repression gegen palästinensische DichterInnen in Israel, wie Dareen Tatour, die aufgrund ihrer künstlerischen Arbeit ins Gefängnis und unter Hausarrest musste.

Wie israelische Offizielle die Bedeutung der kulturellen Weißwaschung verstehen, erklärte ein Beamter folgendermaßen: „Wir werden bekannte Romanautoren und Schriftsteller ins Ausland schicken, ebenso Theatergruppen und Ausstellungen. Auf diese Weise zeigt man Israels schöneres Gesicht, damit an uns nicht nur im Zusammenhang mit Krieg gedacht wird.“ (https://www.nytimes.com/2009/03/19/world/middleeast/19israel.html)

Im Falle des KlezMORE-Festivals werden nicht israelische Kulturschaffende in die Welt geschickt, um israelische Verbrechen zu kaschieren, sondern die Israelische Botschaft besetzt ein Festival, um den Anschein von Normalität zu verbreiten.

Aber es geht auch anders. Nick Cooper und die „Free Radicals“, „KlezPO“ oder „The Just Desserts“ sind Klezmorim, die sich nicht vor den Karren der israelischen Apartheidpolitik spannen lassen und im Gegenteil als MusikerInnen und Menschen Stellung beziehen. Dies tun sie mit „Klezmer against the Wall“ (www.kmaw.net).

Damit führen sie die Klezmermusik in ihre eigentliche aschkenasische Tradition zurück – für Menschen, nicht gegen Menschen.

In diesem Sinne fordern wir die teilnehmenden KünstlerInnen auf, Stellung zu beziehen und ihre Teilnahme abzusagen.

„NO KlezMORE APARTHEID, KILLING and DESTRUCTION – We say NO!“

As part of the worldwide BDS campaign, BDS Austria, calls for the boycott of the 15th „KlezMORE Festival Vienna,“ which will take place from the 10th to the 25th of November 2018.

Our reason is the financial support that the Israeli Embassy in Austria provides for this event. This support turns a cultural event, which is supposed to bring people together, into a promotional event for Israel’s apartheid, occupation and expulsion policies. The musicians and their music become the accompaniment for an inhumane policy that is directed against the legitimate rights of the Palestinian people.

With the support of the Israeli Embassy, the KlezMORE Festival is the accompanying music for:

• the destruction of the Palestinian village of Khan al-Amar – including its school and kindergarten – and the expulsion of the local population

• the murder of hundreds and injuring of thousands of Palestinians by Israeli snipers and fighter planes at the fence between Israel and occupied Gaza

• the repression against Palestinian poets in Israel, such as Dareen Tatour, who was imprisoned and placed under house arrest for her artistic work.

One Israeli official explained the importance of cultural whitewashing as follows: „We will send well-known novelists and writers abroad, as well as theatre groups and exhibitions. This will show Israel’s more beautiful face, so that we will not only be thought of in the context of war.“

In cases such as the KlezMORE festival, Israeli cultural workers are not sent into the world to conceal Israeli crimes – the Israeli Embassy sponsors festivals to spread the semblance of normality.

But there is another way. Nick Cooper and the „Free Radicals“, „KlezPO,“ or „The Just Desserts“ are klezmorim who do not allow themselves to be used to promote Israeli apartheid policies – on the contrary, they take a stand as musicians and human beings. They do it through „Klezmer against the Wall“ (www.kmaw.net).

In this way, they return klezmer music back to its actual Ashkenazi tradition – for people, instead of against people.

Therefore, we call on the artists to take a stand and cancel their participation in the KlezMORE festival.
