Open Letter to the organizers and participating activists at the demonstration in remembrance of the Hanau attack in Vienna, August 22nd. English below!

When I see them, I see us.“

––––––––––––––––

We as BDS Austria, part of the global campaign supporting the rights of the Palestinians, went to the memorial rally for those murdered in Hanau on Saturday, August 22nd, 2020 in Vienna and were verbally and physically attacked by the organizers.

We were present because we see ourselves in those who have been murdered – Ferhat, Gökhan, Hamza, Said Nessar, Mercedes, Sedat, Kaloyan, Fatih and Vili – in the sense of Angela Davis‘ expression: “When I see them, I see us. „

We were there because we wanted to convey to their parents, siblings and friends – without knowing them personally – that we are with them and that we will not forget.

We were there because as members of this society who are so called “people of color“, we also sense the racism on a state and institutional level, as well as on a social and cultural level. We will continue to call their names at every chance.

We were there to convey that the struggles against institutionalized racism and racist murders – be it individual or state crime – and against institutionalized racism are all linked and intertwined. From Ferguson, Minneapolis, Hanau to Palestine. And that, as Angela Davis puts it, freedom is a constant struggle and the struggles are and must be connected.

When you hear the names of the murdered, you hear our names. You see coincidences, we see a pattern.

When two of our activists appeared at the location of the rally, they were first verbally and then physically attacked by white men from the field of the so-called „MIGRANTIFA WIEN“ and the so-called “AUTONOME ANTIFA (W)”. The whole incident was observed, photographed and probably archived as “successful anti-fascism” by the agent of the so-called “PRESSESERVICE” (“Press Service Vienna – Network of Free Photojournalists”). This agent from the “PRESSESERVICE” whose job appears to consist of taking photos of people with a migration background, especially Arabs, under the guise of “anti-racism”, and to publish the photos in a defamatory manner. It seemed as if “MIGRANTIFA WIEN” and “AUTONOME ANTIFA (W)” were organizationally allied with the left-wing alliance “LINKS-Wien”. Allied in repression.

In the run-up, activists from BDS and the so-called “MIGRANTIFA WIEN” had a substantive debate about the composition of the panel and to what extent a Palestinian woman can feel safe at such a protest. Security was promised verbally and informally and the BDS activists have been welcomed.

When we unpacked our BDS flag, the attack began, in the course of which our BDS activists took out their cameras for self-protection and filmed the attack because THE MAJORITY APPEARED TO HAVE DECIDED TO JUST STARE IN SILENCE. The reason why the white men of „MIGRANTIFA WIEN“ and „AUTONOME ANTIFA (W)“ attacked our hijab-wearing activist – not by chance the only one wearing a hijab at the protest – seems to have something to do with the general social consensus that a man is permitted to do everything against anything Muslim.

You talk about “safe spaces”, we see failed spaces. Not coincidences, but a pattern. The “safe spaces”, of which you speak relentlessly, seem to increasingly imitate the military security of the checkpoints. The “security” that Alexia Weiss recently wrote about in the Wiener Zeitung when she expressed the “understandable discomfort” (sic!) when Palestinian flags are carried at a Black Lives Matter demonstration. The “security”, that at least in Europe the bond and solidarity between Black Lives Matter and the struggles for the fundamental human rights of Palestinians will be interrupted, cut off and defamed. You can read this masterpiece on “solidarity work“ here (https://www.wienerzeitung.at/meinung/blogs/juedisch-leben/2063234-BlackLivesMatter-ohne-Wenn-und-Aber.html?fbclid=IwAR2TrwMIsbPFBwq0h4wJqJtyqGz97).
Because solidarity is the strongest weapon, what a nightmare, when the disenfranchised, ostracised, targets of systematic racist violence are showing solidarity with each other…

If the racist infiltrators believe that we were chased away from the rally, they are mistaken in our sister and our other BDS-activist. They only left after warnings by other Turkish/Kurdish activists, because they didn’t want to disturb the site and purpose – the remembrance – of this rally. The remembrance of our siblings. The remembrance of our murdered, by your perpetrators, by your racists.

We had gladly duly noted the formation of a migrant Antifa, the Migrantifa in Vienna. It could counter the for years now observable “hegemonization” of a white Antifa; an authentic PoC-Antifa, that could – with an international, antiracist antifascism – subtend the white “Antifa”, which in Austria and Germany has increasingly been developing into a Transatlantifa. To counter a white Antifa, which de facto excludes any critical migrants, an Antifa like the “AUTONOME ANTIFA” with close institutional and personal involvement with the hegemonial media-apparatus, which sits within the hegemonial institutions of the state, which establishes a hegemonial, racist conception of antifascism within the leftist scene that underpins the state. An Antifa, that via Grüne, Sozialdemokratie and parliamentarian “Leftists” tries to create a white, governable “antifascism” and from time to time likes to lend itself, within the frame of public-service, to a FPÖ-ÖVP government for some type of expertise. Expertise that is supposed to serve governmental institutions for repression.

A Migrantifa that makes the mistake of getting involved with hegemonial state-servants like the “AUTONOME ANTIFA (W)” and “PRESSESERVICE”, would be condemned to failure from the start. It would be the same white, state-underpinning, racist Pseudo-Antifa, like the “AUTONOME ANTIFA (W)” was since its very beginning. Just fraudulent labelling.

Amongst all the attending men and women at the rally, the only ones to protect our siblings, leave the rally and escort our activists away were Turkish and Kurdish sisters, who naturally acted out of a sense of leftist practice. Are you still only seeing coincidences?

At the rally and afterwards, some activists of “MIGRANTIFA WIEN” tried to apologize to us. But we fear that they did not apologize out of an understanding that their actions came from a place of deeply internalized and reproduced racism, that they did not because they realized that organizers of the rally, within the own group, “abuse protests to also send out other messages” (Alexia Weiss) – namely ostracising the Palestinian struggle from other antiracist causes here and elsewhere – no, their fear was we as BDS Austria could release video recordings and pictures of the perpetrators to the public.

You don’t seem to understand. You don’t seem to be able to grasp anything.

We aren’t the photographers of the police or other repression-photographers, like the agents of “PRESSESERVICE”. All that aside. We have filmed and documented the attacks. Your fear isn’t what had happened, but the fact that is has been documented. This has been known for years about the racist “AUTONOME ANTIFA (W)” – which is dominated by (white) men – and the “PRESSESERVICE”, this squad of agents, that run away in panic if anyone films them for a change. But now this mentality seems to have also reached the “MIGRANTIFA WIEN”, which is tokenized by “LINKS-Wien” and the former. All three having overlapping personnel. That’s why they are mostly hooded and masked, in cowardice, or seated in the institutions of the hegemony. This apology of yours is of no value in this case. It has as little value as your supposed dealings with trespassing and abusive men in your group. Weren’t you just talking about solving this issue on social media? Just for you to lose control of your white, male members at a rally again? To attack our Hijabi activist physically?

Your promise – our safety – was ultimately not only passively denied, but actively threatened by you. Cynically you are calling this a “safe space”. It is the cynicism of the Israeli checkpoints, with their signs dictating to the controlled and disenfranchised, the harassed and those shot “out of necessity”, to have a good day.

You are inviting us per chat to talk about this privately. We are not private, we are political. You stand still and glare at the rally as your people attack us and then apologize half-heartedly.
Your apology is, without clearly dealing with the actual issues, as worthless as your promise. “Safe space”.

But, with a little hope of serious engagement with some of you, we want to specify this problem:
Two BDS Austria activists are coming to attend your rally. Instead of directly trying to face them to address the issue, you first have to find Turkish/Kurdish people to send them over, to do the dirty work on your behalf. The dirty work being talking to us, disinviting us, to extract us. In this colonial understanding of yours, using PoC as objects for your rotten politics, you wanted to stay in the background, as always. Your problem was that the people who you had first tasked with removing us were now denying their job – they showed solidarity with us. Yes, this is the HORROR for your policy, which is serving the hegemony. That’s why you ultimately attacked our people under the protection of the police(!) and “PRESSESERVICE”(!).

The probably best expression of identifying with the state, authorities and institutions was achieved by one of your activists who seemed almost endearing with his attempt to attack BDS by pulling out a resolution by the currently ruling (and always) racist parliament. You don’t get it, do you? Which political left, which Migrantifa would use reactionary resolutions by the institutionally racist hegemony?

Lastly, we want to address the following:

  • To the big majority of men and women in immediate proximity of the attacks, those who saw everything but stayed quiet. You missed a chance. This is what is happening at Praterstern when police are hunting Afghan refugees, when Nazis are chasing people through the streets of Bautzen. Bystanders. When you are protesting against racist murders, attacks and infringement but you stay silent during this attack, what purpose did your protest have?
  • Thank you to the dear sisters (Ablalar), who escorted our people out of this attack. Solidarity in practice, hands-on, won’t be forgotten. We also want to thank those who inquired about our campaign and also showed their disgust towards this treatment – spontaneous solidarity, despite not knowing us

Kein Vergessen. (“No forgetting.”)

And yet we are willing to have a serious discourse with you.
