Watch how Südwind, who claim solidarity with “all those who are denied political voice…” silenced members of BDS Austria and forced them out of #SüdwindStrassenfest2022 on the day of commemoration of the Nakba.

Every year the Südwind street festival is organised in Vienna, allegedly providing a space to be “critical of the economics-oriented doctrine of neoliberal globalisation’s rich and powerful”.

“Südwind solidarizes with those disadvantaged by the current world order, i.e. all those who are denied political voice, material resources, cultural fulfilmet, gender equality, education, and/or healthcare. We expose the structural causes for these inequalities”, they claim.

After signing up and setting up our info stand, the organisers and security personnel came to us, claiming that we haven’t signed up to set up a stand, talking down to us and condescendingly explaining the registration process.

After all the false bureaucratic excuses to kick us out, a Südwind member finally admitted that Südwind simply rejects the Palestinian-led BDS campaign.

They continued with their false claims, such as having invited us for years to talk about our participation in the festival, and refused to listen to us trying to inform them about the Nakba and human rights abuses still getting carried out by the Israeli occupation.

The security personnel called the police later on.

So we packed our things and informed all participants about the Nakba in our own way.

With the escalating amount of repression of free speech in Austria, such behaviour from an organisation that claims solidarity with those denied a voice is shameful to say the least.

Palestinian voices will never be silenced!

Today we remember Palestine’s great catastrophe – the Nakba. May 15th 1948 marks the culmination of the atrocities committed by Zionist terrorist militias against the Palestinian communities in order to fulfil the fascist dreams of Herzl and Weizmann of creating a Jewish state and erasing Palestine off the map. As “Israel” celebrates its birth, we remember all the lives lost, homes demolished, and stories erased in the bloody process of European settler colonialism on the holy land of Palestine.

Leading up to the Nakba the Palestinian people saw some of the world’s most atrocious massacres, including the Deir Yassin massacre, the Balad al Shaykh massacre, the Sa’sa’ massacre, and countless more, where hundreds of Palestinian men, women, and children were indiscriminately murdered and dozens of houses blown up.

From 1947 to 1949, over 800,000 Palestinians were displaced from their homes, becoming refugees; living and dying in exile. Over 15,000 Palestinians were murdered in more than 70 massacres in order to make place for European settlers to steal and loot their land and lives. 530 known Palestinian villages, in addition to major towns and cities, were ethnically cleansed and destroyed.

Though commemorated on the 15th of May 1948, the mass exodus and ethnic cleansing of Palestinians started long before 1948, during the years of the British mandate, and continues to this day.  With American and European backing, the colonial entity of “Israel”, erected on the mass graves of the Palestinian people, continues to murder and loot with unparalleled impunity.

As homes and livelihoods are currently being demolished in Masafer Yatta, in Silwan, and all over occupied Palestine, and as the siege on Gaza and the West Bank intensifies, it is more crucial than ever for us to take action and stand in the face of the ongoing ethnic cleansing of the Palestinian people. Through Boycotts, Divestment, and Sanctions, the BDS movement aims to challenge the international support of the Israeli occupation until Palestinians can claim their right of return to their homes.

74 years after the Nakba, and one year after Israel’s brutal bombardment of the besieged Gaza strip that took 256 Palestinian lives including 66 children, the Palestinian resistance remains steadfast in the face of the world’s most bloodthirsty military regime. May we see the end of the Israeli occupation, and may all the refugees soon become returnees.

Heute gedenken wir der großen Katastrophe Palästinas – der Nakba. Der 15. Mai 1948 markiert den Höhepunkt der Gräueltaten, die von zionistischen Terrormilizen gegen die palästinensischen Gemeinden begangen wurden. Wir gedenken den faschistischen Träumen von Herzl und Weizmann von der Schaffung eines jüdischen Staates und der Auslöschung Palästinas von der Landkarte. Während Israel seine Geburt feiert, erinnern wir uns an all die verlorenen Leben, zerstörten Häuser und Geschichten, die im blutigen Prozess des europäischen Siedlerkolonialismus im heiligen Land Palästina ausgelöscht wurden.

Vor der Nakba erlebte das palästinensische Volk einige der grausamsten Massaker der Welt, darunter das Massaker von Deir Yassin, das Massaker von Balad al Shaykh, das Massaker von Sa’sa‘ und unzählige mehr, bei denen Hunderte von palästinensischen Männern, Frauen und Kindern wahllos ermordet und Dutzende von Häusern in die Luft gesprengt wurden.

Von 1947 bis 1949 wurden über 800.000 PalästinenserInnen aus ihren Häusern vertrieben und zu Flüchtlingen. Für sie bedeutet dies ein Leben und Sterben im Exil. Über 15.000 PalästinenserInnen wurden in mehr als 70 Massakern ermordet, um Platz für europäische Siedler zu schaffen, um ihr Land und ihr Leben zu stehlen und zu plündern. 530 bekannte palästinensische Dörfer wurden neben größeren Städten ethnisch gesäubert und zerstört.

Obwohl am 15. Mai 1948 gedacht, begann der Massengenozid und die ethnische Säuberung der PalästinenserInnen lange vor 1948, in den Jahren des britischen Mandats, und dauert bis heute an.  Mit amerikanischer und europäischer Unterstützung fährt der europäische Siedlerkolonialstaat Israel, der auf den Massengräbern des palästinensischen Volkes errichtet wurde, fort, ungestraft zu morden und zu plündern.

Da derzeit Häuser und Lebensgrundlagen in Masafer Yatta, in Silwan und im gesamten besetzten Palästina zerstört werden und die Belagerung von Gaza und der Westbank zunimmt, ist es für uns wichtiger denn je, Maßnahmen zu ergreifen und uns gegen die anhaltende ethnische Säuberung des palästinensischen Volkes zu stellen.

74 Jahre nach der Nakba und ein Jahr nach Israels brutaler Bombardierung des belagerten Gazastreifens, bei der 256 Palästinenser ums Leben kamen, darunter 66 Kinder, bleibt der palästinensische Widerstand angesichts des blutrünstigsten Militärregimes der Welt standhaft.

Durch Boykotte, Desinvestitionen und Sanktionen zielt die gewaltfreie BDS-Bewegung darauf ab, die israelische Besatzung unter Druck zu setzen, bis sie

1. die Besatzung und Kolonisierung aller arabischen Landes beendet und die Apartheidmauer abreist,
2. die Grundrechte der arabisch-palästinensischen Bürger Israels auf volle Gleichheit anerkennt und
3. das Recht der palästinensischen Flüchtlinge auf Rückkehr in ihre Häuser und ihr Eigentum, wie in der UN-Resolution 194 festgelegt ist, respektiert und umsetzt.
